@Timber_LXG_5 the only reason the military wants them is because of wear on weapons and poor ammunition quality. There is a reason almost no firearms ever made have them. It is a stupid and unique thing the military has so we can keep using shitty old guns for a long time. It is better to not have the additional weight and complexity and simply have a clean weapon. Watch the WWSD videos about the AR, there is a very good reason no one but the us military wants it or needs it. ...they don't have the same morons in legislation and command as we do here.

@dog209 simo did virtually all his killing at 100-150m. He was in dense forest and rough topography, there weren't extreme distance sight lines and he did not use an optic.
33
Lot closer to 5000 years than 50 mate. Afghanistan is always a place of war in human history
30
@alexbowman7582 ALL extreme distance snipers do. Americans are not the only ones affected by things like the wind and gravity.

M16 reliability is a battlefield myth that doesn't have merit and is based on old political decisions that have long been rectified. L85 criticism is inherent to the firearm's design and very very real. There is a reason the AR15 has taken over global arms
20
Still in use in 40,000 years with the death korps of krieg

Except it clearly is hitting the barrel a lot. The alignment isn't perfect and in the slow motion you can see the projectile bouncing down the barrel. The manufacturing isn't good enough to float the round perfectly.

@808bigisland The suppressors are 3D printed and far advanced of any other kind of suppressor. Traditional suppressors have already been proven in mass US military adoption so going cheaper and more durable is a major step which is why the Army is going 100% suppressed. Also because of the payouts to folks like me who got issued bad ear protection, further adding to the cost savings. Additionally, it's the US, not a smaller country. Throwing away the can after a few years is something the US can afford easily, you would be shocked at some of the other things we do. Money burning lol. But this is actually designed from the start to mitigate these issues. This isn't try #1, the Army has been at this a very very long time. They don't change ammo lightly at all but this is a very long time coming. The optic is much much more bold, dramatic, and risky but that also is proven. I can't speak on its comparison to the round you mentioned, I haven't shot it or this. I know that the Army Futures command is absolutely on the cutting edge though so if this performs slightly worse than another round at penetrating green wood then I am positive the round has loads of advantage elsewhere to more than make up for it. Accuracy and range no doubt, the lighter high velocity is always the choice taken va slightly heavier and slower. I do find it very interesting how we have moved back to those cartridges that were initially turned down for the intermediate ones though. Physics is clearly showing the bias here in terms of similarities. It is a saying in the US military: "Nothing ten years and then billion dollars can't fix."

@ReaperofValhalla Well I'm out of the Army myself but let me simplify for you: In ww2 they issued rifles and carbines yeah? Garand and M1 Different rifles for the secondary units and the main units. Now instead you have lower power ammo which is still deadly and hot ammo How is it different from issuing a carbine and a rifle? And idk what unit you are in but in the 101st we had plenty of opportunity to train lmao. Plenty. So don't worry man, the units than need to kill guys aren't going to be like "uh oh, we don't know how to shoot hurr" And the units that aren't ever going to shoot bad guys in armor don't need to be using high velocity super ammo do they? And I'm sorry dude but an 11 series is probably the absolute worst place you can be in the army for seeing what is going on overall. Brigade level is barely able to see big army's plans for 95% of the command. The US Army is not dumb and believe it or not it won't be that hard to learn to shoot hot ammo. And the key point is everything that might have some slight complications for the US Army is going to be impossible for China or Russia. And that's the point. For the next few decades we are guaranteed to overmatch in infantry v infantry. And overmatch is what the US military is doing. Bet And I'm sorry if I made it seem like I'm talking down, it's just we've heard this before with NVG's and all kinds of stuff

@dog209 that is idiotic. Many people have good distance vision and hero worshipping simo as if he is the only person to have ever been born who could do it is just childish. There are hundreds of thousands if not millions of very good marksman. There are tens if not hundreds of millions of people with better than average vision. It is very difficult, few can do it and few have the skill and even fewer would ever try. But one man is the only person ever ? Stop reading comic books and playing video games ...your perspective is warped.

If you think it's going to be hard to do now imagine how hard it will be for China or Russia to catch up and be able to peer with HV ammo like this. This rifle is the cutting edge and this is what uncle sam does, we do it because it is hard and no one else can. It represents literal decades of superiority over our adversaries. I am absolutely confident in the US Army and US Marine Corps being able to dominate with this weapon. Everything you said applies to literally every single equipment the military uses. Maybe you were national guard, idk why you lack confidence.

I got all kinds of glimpses into Afghanistan (pashtu) just by buying bags of socks for them. It was hard to get good socks there I guess. Lovely food too
9
I think it was Einstein who said you can explain it simply if you really understand it.
9
You can with a muzzleloader too, just slide the rifle down to where the muzzzle is near you and the butt by your feet. Like come on, let's think for a minute here mates.

It is people accidentally pressing the button on their phones
8
Better than the M14
8
Not at all. In fact, they went way above and beyond in addressing the issues of the rifle and updating it. They have phenomenal ethics for any company, let alone a firearms manufacturer.
8
@emperorfaiz the very first iteration was good. Political decisions to change the powder, tell soldiers they didn't have to clean them, and issue crap magazines all have nothing to do with the design of the rifle.

How are the apple trees doing?
6
Wonderful collab. Love the 'amateur' historian crowd on YouTube, I really think you guys are doing something great with education and history
6
The part of Afghanistan/pakistan this comes from isn't really a desert. It is dry but rocky trees and scrubland kind of dry. High alpine, not sandy desert, that's more south and west which has a different culture and is completely different tribal groups. These are mountain tribe kind of people, the pashto
5
The learning curve from 1 way range to 2 way range is also high.

@harveywallbanger3123 Disagree completely on the 249 and 240. I absolutely love those guns. The 249 on it's bipod in position is a fantastic gun, I would trust it without doubt. And the 240 is a true beast, I think by now it's younger cousin may be replacing it with better tech but it was the one who knocked over and replaced the M60 and that gun is a LEGEND. The 240 jumps around? That thing felt like boba in a tea straw to me and was the best time I personally ever had with 7.62
5
Saw is nice to shoot at least. 5.56 with all that weight makes it a dream. Plus, when you are in the prone with the hand on the stock firing position it's really easy to get away with napping

In Basic my drill sergeant introduced us to this guy like this: "Privates! This here is the two forty bravo! It is 27 POINT 6 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal! If you walk into a club with one of these you are damn sure going home with someone!" I love the 240, great machine gun. It'll put hair on your chest and make your dick bigger.

Don't want to get to the Curie Point.

All the teachers and lawmakers here grew up in the 60's - 80's. It isn't our fault we didn't get that experience
3
@GrenadierV we filled them to maximum capacity. I think you are mistaking your specific training to fix some issue with the magazine for universal military doctrine. You were issued poor magazines and were given training to accommodate that. Do not try to speak for all military veterans when sharing your perspective based on your training and experiences

I'm here weeks after reading this comment to say thanks for the recommendation mate. Been watching his stuff all week.
3
@freedomloverusa3030 I doubt it. The Army is very well committed to the high velocity and short barrel length. The US has the money to outfit all of NATO.

This comment brought me back, seeing trunks covered in flowers and indian cloth. What a trip man

It was ww1, they were almost certainly executed.

No it wouldn't have. Napoleon would not have won because of better rifles. Political and logistical reality ruined him, not tactical considerations. At the time people thought he was invincible and unbeatable already. He was undefeated in the field for huge amounts of time. ...he didn't need a better rifle.
2
@wazza33racer You're right, no one should ever have a first aid kit...
2
@kevin pierson gasp, if only everyone had known that for the last 15 years!
2
Disappearing guns like this were common across many different countries but quickly became obsolete. You see so many british ones because they made the largest investment in building up their fortifications with disappearing guns.
2
And he was completely correct. He did not have anything like the time to invest the decades it would take for steam to become a viable method of propulsion. He didn't make the mistakes of hitler, he focused very well on what was practical and could be done in time to matter. His decision to not adopt the rifle or the steam ship was absolutely correct for him. Set human warfare back no doubt but investment in these technologies would have been expensive wastes that wouldn't have produced any results for him. A thousand of these rifles wouldn't have won him wars lost because of lack of food.
2
@server1ok You can literally make one in science class. Does it not exist until it matches some comic book ideal of yours? I am really struggling to find your definition of coil gun. A gauss gun is literally a coil gun, how powerful do you think it has to be to meet your definable standard?
2
@server1ok Alright well I hope you keep your enthusiasm going forward but I really don't have time to explain things to you now if you aren't going to read. Take care, learn some metric.
2
@server1ok Dude, go argue with the articles you read and calm down. I explained to a guy that these guns still have an equal reaction and you have spent hours and hours being mad and talking past me. Get help. I don't work with you, I'm not paid to listen to you rant past me about things I never said. I get this is a comment section but I have to work and not on Wikipedia. You are literally making up an argument and having it 100% on your own because you are too excited and didn't read. I never took any position you have argued against yet other than the fact that this rifle is not the only gauss coil gun small arm. Read about it in 30 years when it's on Wikipedia and go argue with kids more because I don't work in commercial and I'm not begging investors. And you for sure have never had this discussion with decision makers on a military base and it bloody shows.
2
@MadMax-bq6pg That is a panic scenario. The US is issuing them now, years before a conflict. So everyone will be extremely familiar with them. They are also so near other weapons and calibers that it will be easy to adapt a novice average american
2
@freedomloverusa3030 Oh, you are a troll bot. Boring.
