  4. The primary reason is because of the age of the vast majority of the Russian armour. It is all from a time when it was thought "bigger is best" Today, speed range and accuracy are more desired and are more effective on a battlefield. It reminds me of F1, there are many good reasons why the V8 cars are superior but everyone loves the V12's. Heavy artillery has that same charm as a machine.
