Electric cars will be the future but not in private ownership. For urban, why bother even owning an electric car when you can use ridesharing or metro rail and not deal with parking...I realized this when I was in Paris 2 weeks ago. I mean, electric cars are boring (no exhaust note, no engine growl, no rumbling, no manual transmission), so if they're no fun then why bother owning one if they're just going to be an appliance to get you from A to B, even more when it's autonomous?

Just like ICE replaced horses for the masses, electric cars will replace ICE cars for the masses. But the older technology is more fun and that's why people still ride horses and it will be for the rich. Likewise, an ICE car with a manual transmission is more fun so people will still drive it but it will be for the rich. The masses will use electric cars as an appliance, just like the metro rail in Paris, just boring transportation to get from A to B.

@Prince: How will future movies with electric cars be any exciting without the engine sounds?? Let me see, it'll be hummmmm, hummmm, boy that's exciting....not.

I don't think that there will even be a used car market for electric cars when the price to replace batteries is close to the cost of the car. Let's say a battery replacement is $5-$7k, I don't think a used car buyer would pay more than that for the car. A used car buyer probably is not going to have money to install a charger in their house assuming they even own a house instead of renting an apt.

What do we do with all the old lithium batteries?? Especially because electric cars have way more batteries than an ICE?

Research has shown that people spend an average of 7 minutes at a gas station and 30 minutes at a station on vacation trips. Until electric cars can achieve 7 minutes to refuel, I don't think it will ever go mainstream to replace ICE for personal ownership. Most people aren't going to install a charger in their house. If I forget to plug it in at home overnight, I'd want to be able to go to a fuel station and get charged in 7 minutes. Sometimes we forget to plug in our smartphones overnight but I can still drive an ICE car to go to work and charge it on the way and not be late. But if I forget to plug a Tesla in at home overnight, I'd want to be able to go to a fuel station and get charged in 7 minutes. Even if there were enough battery to get to work, I'd want enough to do errands and get home too.
