A little correction about the late-1980s/early 1990s for the 'boomers'. That was when the Soviet Union was collapsing over a few years and the USA's military manufacturing complex collapsed along with it, followed by consolidation in the industry and closing of military bases around the country. Lot of folks in my region were effected (the 'regional effect' PZ mentions near the end), and housing prices/interest rates took a dive back then. Housing got cheap as unemployed folks tried to sell their homes but a good chunk of potential buyers were unemployed, too. I do wish I would have had a spare $100,000 to pick up a few properties back them. ☹

Large shower spaces instead of bathtubs, both in new hones and remodels. If you want a tub that's an upgrade in a new home. In some newer homes undergoing remodeling you can't put a tub on a second floor without modifying the structural beams of the house to carry the excess weight of the tub and its water capacity.

My current home was bought in 1993 and I was in my mid-30s. If I would have bought it 5 years earlier it would have been 50% more (5.5X my wage) with the mortgage interest rate 100% higher. Patience is a virtue, wait and see what happens with the economy in the near future, that's what I did.

There were 'Harvest Gold" kitchen appliances and hi-low carpet in the house I bought. And you forgot to mention the wood paneling on the walls. 😎 Fortunately no sunken living room!
