  1. I hear you. By the 1960's you didn't need kids to help out around your 'estate', typically a suburban house with a small yard, as you didn't have all that 40+ acres of farmland to maintain.   3. That's also an issue since we've just had about a 'century of the "golden age" of vaccines and antibiotics. Those all got developed in the first half of the 20th century, drastically reducing mortality and increasing youth and older folks survival rates. Most of the nasty organisms have started to become adapted to all those vaccines and antibiotics so the mortality rates from diseases are slowly starting to creep back up.
