  1. And don't forget Vietnam's strategic position on the South China Sea. They're on one side of the trade routes through the area, the Philippines on the other. It makes China have to think twice when they try to exert control of the area's sea lanes, and how many extra resources they need to do it. I don't live that far from the 'Little Saigon' area in Southern California. Its a bustling Vietnamese enclave (somewhat ethnically insulated) that developed from a run-down industrial/commercial area by Vietnamese immigrants. The South Vietnamese ideal still remains strong in the area, especially among the older folks, and any sign of support for the Hanoi government is quickly met with public protests.
