Even today I thought the waterway leading from the open Arctic to Murmansk was pretty heavily defended due to the submarine port, and probably more so with the Ukrainian conflict and how much damage the Ukrainians have been able to inflict far away from their borders. I just can't see a northern shipping route with all the political and military drama going on these days.

  2.  @Withnail1969  The Bearing Straight is quite a bit wider than 12 miles (about 50 miles). Just stay to the east of the Diomede islands in the middle of it and you're OK (one owned by Russia, the other by the USA).
