I thought uranium deposits were fairly widespread (but not overly abundant), but the real problem is finding deposits rich enough in the isotope U-235, since U-235 is only a fraction-of-a-percent of concentration in the best of the mined ores. The USA also had deposits, mostly on native American reservations in the southwest, but environmental and the native Americans themselves keep it off limits.
