Beyond the building of military ships (including submarines) is there any ongoing commercial shipbuilding anywhere in the USA? Even for barges for river transport off goods? I'm not aware of anything beyond the private personal boats used for waterskiing, fishing, etc.

I also thought it was odd since he mentioned the Cumberland Gap, which is not a "waterway" between the Western and Eastern sides of the Appalachian Mountains. Wouldn't it have been easier to take products to the Ohio River for transport back in the 1920s-1960s era?

Unions were a lot bigger/stronger back then, so it made water transport more expensive. Somewhat similar to why railroad transport is lacking these days. Trucking regulations and unions got dropped or extensively scaled back, especially in the Reagan era, so that became the dominant way to get stuff from here to there.

Brazil was also exporting a lot of steel to the USA in the 2000s. That was during the Bush presidency, when he was being asked to put tariffs on imported steel. He eventually sided with not doing it because there were more jobs at stake (voters, union voters too) in the 'upstream' offloading, handling and distribution of that imported steel than there would have been in making that steel at a USA plant.
