One of the problems was German car companies got rid of the older engineers 'en-masse' back in the 1990s who could design both durability and servicability into a car. The new crop of engineers couldn't do that. They had plenty of design issues back in the late 1970's when they introduced water-cooled cars, too.

More like industry wants pre-trained, pre-certified trade workers with multiple years of experience to work for wages just barely above minimum wage. Those of you who went out and got the training & certification need not apply as the industry does not want to spend labor time training you on company products/procedures and letting you get up-to-speed over a few weeks timeframe. So industry complains about a skilled worker shortage and they can't find anyone who can do it EXACTLY as THEY want it and need it done BY THEIR SPECIFIC COMPANY POLICIES.

Wasn't Frau Merkel and her socialist party trying really hard to appease the 'green' movement pretty heavily, promoting wind and solar while demonizing nuclear power? Throw in a very rare 9.0 earthquake in a land half a world away that, unlike Germany, regularly has earthquakes (Japan) and a resulting 30 ft tidal wave, and the paranoia associated with nuke plants got blown out of proportion
