  1. I always thought Khorosan was a region in the west Afghanistan/eastern Iran/southern Central Asian Republics (the other "-stan" countries). Its that crossroads area of southern Asia that has been fought over numerous times in history but no organized group has been able to conquer or control for any significant length of time before the next battle, keeping it stuck "one step beyond the stone age". (stole that last phrase from a book title).
