  1. California's Central Valley farmers are always complaining. Either the government is doing too much and killing them off, or doing too little to help them out and killing them off. Peter forgot the Salinas and Imperial Valley, too. Each is those is year-round productive but has its own set of problems.

  3. I wonder if he misspoke and wanted to mention Southern Africa and not just South Africa. A good portion of southern Africa centered around Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) was highly productive and exported food to other areas of Africa and the world. Its good that apartheid collapsed in those countries, but it also collapsed the agricultural industries as farms changed from white to black ownership with no transfer of knowldge on how to farm in those areas (soils, climate, etc). You might look at the area as having changed from a breadbasket to a basket case. All the imports of fuel and fertilizer aren't going to help unless the political situation changes.
