  1. Somewhat related to self checkout. Aldi Grocery in the USA uses electronic price tags on the shelves. They appear to use infra red as a communication pathway as I see a small lens on the tag. There is a chance this is just a light sensor that shuts the display off when the lights are out in order to conserve battery. Supposedly Walmart is moving to this technology as well.
