@TopCat2021 Whenever you go to by a 100% new car, do you do research as to if the stat / housing and sensor are separate items or do you look for payments under $ 100 per month? If you only buy used cars, your opinion of what a car maker is irrelevant since car makers sell to people that buy new cars.

Subbing a value isn't new, it goes back decades. The coolant temp gauge maxes out as a fail safe. I'm betting the coolant temp sensor was failing also. So how would you know what the coolant temp is if the sensor has failed / is glitchy?

Lucas Ch You do realize that most cars will go their entire useful life with many of their original parts don't you?

Most all thermostats use a wax motor.

Values are subbed in order to keep the car running. Coolant temp on a computer engine is like a choke plate on a carb car. Would you rather the car stop running if the sensor failed?

The scan data shows coolant temp voltage however it is showing 0 to something like 20 V max. This seems like too high of a range, 0 to 5 V is typical with anything below say 0.5 or above 4.5 tripping shorted or open circuit codes.

If pre computer cars were so good, why are they virtually non existent on today's roads?

Computers subbing values goes way back and isn't anything new, this keeps the car running if a component fails.
