@ridethecurve55 said " I was disappointed that HG never mentioned to One phrase I was waiting for: Planned Obsolescence. It was a hallmark of the Big Three. " Would you pay 2X for a car that lasted forever but you only kept it for 7 years? I doubt it. Anything will last a long time if it is cared for however, few people actually maintain their cars. Cars are far more reliable than in days past however customer expectations consistently exceed reality. In the 70's , a car with 75,000 miles was considered to be junk, now cars pushing 200,000 still have value. Don't forget that the cost of manufacture has gone down allowing for more features for the same or slightly higher cost You can continue to play the victim card or accept reality.

It's unfortunate that history education in the USA focuses on mindlessly remembering dates / places rather than the meaning of events and how they connect. Given students many of these 5 - 15 min THG vids then allow them to pick a few for further study on their own.

@jaybob9208 That is only on the V8 cars which were very few.as the car was never designed to take a V8. Or how about the GM W body cars with a V6? You had to remove 2 motor mounts and tilt the motor to access the rear plugs, oh the horror. This process involved pulling 2 bolts in the upper rad support, tilting the motor by hand then sliding the bolts into tabs designed to hold the motor in place. Literally takes 2 minutes but oh the horror.

@stephensoltau2823 For more interesting looks at history and how one thing leads to another, look at the TV series "Connections " and " The day the world changed " hosted by James Burke. These programs can be found on You tube.

For flights over water / remote lands, there is something called ETOPS " Extended-range Twin-engine Operations Performance Standards " This is a standard that the plane must be able to operate on one engine and still make it to an alternate safe landing location. ETOPS is also known at Engines Turn Otherwise Passengers Swim.

The problem with many K - 12 schools is the reliance on mindless memorization of minute easy to test for details like dates / places rather than the aura of what happened. If only schools followed the THG format by giving students broad , time limited exposure to topics. Every few weeks the assignment would be to pick a topic the student is interested in and do further research for a short discussion. While this might be more difficult to test for, the outcome would be far better for the student. This would kind of follow the 3M 15 % rule.

THG, a tie in to Beech. See the Sept 2004 edition of " Air & Space Smithsonian " for the article " Beached Starship " that outlines the cutting edge and somewhat troubled Beech Starship aircraft. As a side note, there are a handful of the 53 planes still flying. To quote " . . . ( in the early 1980's ) As tensions grew between Rutan and Beech, they also grew between Beech and Raytheon. Beech's genteel culture buckled under the abrupt ways of its new parent. Since 1950, Beech had been run by Walter Beech's much younger widow, Olive Ann. Mrs Beech would put yellow " happy face " stickers on the office doors of meritorious executives. Company picnics were courtly, civilized affairs." It then goes on to say how Raytheons clamps tightened with Mrs Beech being pushed aside. Between 82 and 89 there were 3 presidents and 4 engineering VPs leaving the company in a constant state of flux.

From the president of 3M, William McKnight , in 1948 “Mistakes will be made,” McKnight wrote. “But if a person is essentially right, the mistakes he or she makes are not as serious in the long run as the mistakes management will make if it undertakes to tell those in authority exactly how they must do their jobs.” “Management that is destructively critical when mistakes are made kills initiative. And it's essential that we have many people with initiative if we are to continue to grow.”

Actually, the X cars launched all other GM FWD cars. The only real problem the early cars had was the automatic transmission pump drive shaft wearing the splines off. This is an in the car repair with an upgraded shaft and pump rotor. Some forget that the Chevy Celebrity was largely an X car underneath but is regarded as a decent car. It was a massive undertaking to design a 100% new car from scratch especially when computer aided design was virtually non existent. To be fair in comparing early 80's USA designed small FWD cars, one must compare them to early 60's Asian FWD cars as these would have been at the point in the development curve. One could even argue that Euro manufactures had a handle on small cars all the way back into the late 30's with makers like Citroen , Fiat , Austin, VW .

From what I recall, there is even nuke grade tape, it has something to do with the adhesive not leaving a residue on the surface when removed.

@achillebelanger9546 said " My 1970s Ford Trucks had two to six hundred thousand miles on them. One 1980s Ford Van did too. 1990s to 2000s JUNK didn’t make it passed 150 K on the Clock " Do realize that there is someone out there saying that 1990 to 2000 is much better than 2010 to 2020 stuff. As well as someone saying 1950's stuff was better than your precious 1970 / 80 stuff. How many times did you need to rebuild the motor / transmission on your 70 / 80 stuff? What was your cost per mile? ( RE fuel mileage / tune ups / carb rebuilds / oil changes ) Remember, I worked on this stuff when it was a few years old and continue to be connected to the automotive industry. I know what this 80 and older stuff was like. I'll take a car that uses unleaded fuel , has modern fuel injection, starts every day, can legitimately go 8,000 miles on an oil change over a drippy leaky carb that has difficulty starting in sub zero weather, needs an oil change every 3,000 miles any day.

@srcastic8764 said " I only like their trucks now, but I can’t buy them new due to the ridiculous cost now. " Run past prices through the CPI calculator ( Consumer Pricing Index ) to convert past $ into today's $ Not all old stuff was cheap especially considering how much longer newer stuff lasts with less repairs / maintenance / fuel mileage. Cost per mile is what really matters.
