  1. Excess brake pedal travel. These used a cable from the steering column to brake pedal to transmission interlock to prevent shifting from park unless the brake is applied. The extra travel is annoying because you are initially pressing against a spring to actuate the interlock while creeping up on hydraulic brake pressure. Throttle. These use an electronic throttle actuator. Also, the transmission needs to sequentially downshift giving a dead spot in throttle response. ( I think the trans computer talks to the engine computer to limit throttle on downshifts. ) Steering numbness. In the past I've read that Mercedes traditionally had numb steering for more stability at high speeds.

  2. Something else to think about Mercedes ( Like for example Sony ) made a high quality innovated pricey product that was worth the extra $ because it was better than the competition. As the lower brands increased quality / features the added cost of a Mercedes / Sony product didn't being enough value to the transaction. Mercedes had to do something in order to survive.

  5.  @eze8970  From what I've read, one of the reasons MB wanted Chrysler was for their great parts distribution network. I doubt that Chrysler had much negative impact on MB. I'd also think that some of Chrysler's " we use a computer to design the car " tech transferred to MB . I have a 97 C280 that I feel is Toyota interior quality however this is an entry level car. I also have a 97 SL320 that while build quality is great, the assembly isn't very integrated and is a mess to work on things like a heater core. ( RE the car is built from a pile of parts rather than prebuilt modules that are hung on the car. " Hand built " isn't always a good thing, speed of the assembly line is what really matters. )
