Coming at this from an engineering problem perspective:
There are two basic types of dynos Acceleration ( Dynojet , drum style ) and Loading ( Mustang , water brake , eddy current , hydraulic ) . Also, with software a loading dyno can mimic an acceleration dyno on acceleration but not deceleration. Deceleration is more critical in road racing and probably the last few % you want to chase.
Which one you depends on what you want to do with the engine / car and there are compromises with both.
Acceleration Dyno ( usually chassis though engine is possible but I don't think there are any commercially ones available. )
Say you are building a drag car. An acceleration dyno is better because it mimics actual driving, however the single drum isn't going to like acceleration from 0 MPH due to the tire contact patch being a line rather than an area.

Ian makes rational points to change the laws however there are things / actions / people in play that will harm the cause:
Making a stock , adding velcro then calling it a ( wink wink ) pistol brace is a grade school level cheat. This isn't going to gain points with law makers who are on the fence about changing the laws. ( see also, key cards , wall hangers, solvent traps, )
Sending nasty, low IQ , " language " laden letters to the ATF or raiding the offices dressed in a Viking costume isn't going to help. There needs to be a certain level of professionalism / logic involved.
The blindly rabid " shall not " people are not helping the situation. Articulate , as Ian did, what the current law is, what needs to be changed and don't go off on some sort of rant. Coming off as some sort of " no one is going to tell ME what to do " lunatic never helps any situation.
( As a side note, the " Shall not " people better start fighting for the rights of institutionalized violently mentally ill people if they are actually true believers. )
I'm fully ready for the shall not crowd to respond with comments involving boots and such however they will be exposing themselves as those who will further entrench law makers not to change laws. This helps no one.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this design, many brands of engines us this system. There is such a thing as accumulation of tolerances that will cause variation in initial cam timing if the system uses a key way. Rod journal to crank key location, timing chain length, crank to cylinder deck height , cam to cylinder head height, cam sprocket key location, cam key location. And. . . Mill the head during a repair and cam timing changes.
Engine assembly with the floating system is much faster too, hang the parts, lock the cam / crank and tighten things down, easy.

Look at some magazine / news paper ads from the 50's , 60's , 70's. Run the cost of goods through the CPI calculator. Items we take for granted were $$ back then. ( I will admit that fuel was somewhat less expensive then however, deep drilling, safety considerations as well as increased world wide demand increase the current prices.)
People had less " stuff " in the 50's , 60's , 70's and what they bought was $$$ , look at my fan example.

Small to medium shops have moved to installing rebuilds from places like Jasper. This is due to the time it takes to rebuild a trans / special tools / getting parts and the most important reason, the ability for a mass rebuilder to dyno test the trans on a test stand.
Cars are far more reliable than in days past, how many 70's cars in the 80's did you see on used car lots that had 200,000 miles? 100,000 ? 75,000 ? 50,000? Today a car with 150,000 still has another 100,000 left in it. Sure it may need some repairs but that is far better than only getting 75,000 total life from new.
Also, repair shops only see the ones that need repairs not the ones that keep rolling along with just basic maintenance.
There are 3 things needed to successfully work on a modern car beyond changing hard parts. Wiring diagrams / high level scan tool ( not a $ 50 code reader ) and a working knowledge of electronics.

@thedelawareranch2379 There is nothing inherently wrong with a PT. They were inexpensive when new ( about 14 K in 06 ) , use materials that are decent ( except for 05 and older dash top plastic that falls apart in the sun ) and drive pretty well. A lot of engineering work went into making a car good on a limited budget.
I put a gen 2 ( 06 + ) together for Mom and Dad. This car is a box on wheels with upright seating that is just the right height for them to get into ( not falling down into a low car , not jumping up into a truck ) I got it at 155,000 , needed to change 4 wheel bearings , rear shocks , headlights due to fogging, brake lining.
As a precaution to prevent future breakdown changed plugs , wires , belts , water pump , timing belt , coolant hoses , ignition coil , wires , valve cover gasket , heater core , AC evaporator, all of these were original and I was not going to wait for random breakdowns. Pulled the starter and alternator for a lube / inspection ( still good ) Car now has 175,000 with zero problems on original motor / trans.

Blacks make up 13% of the US population, murders tend to be race on race,
55.9 % were B offenders ,
54.7 % of the victims were B.
I'd say that on a percapita basis, B people commit murder at a much higher rate than any other group.

Title "UNDERGROUND RADIO" HAS DIFFERENT MEANING INSIDE BUNKER
PAUL/ANCHOR: Our final story this week takes us underground where one amateur radio club puts a Cold War-era relic to good use. Jeremy Boot G4NJH introduces us to that club.
JEREMY: A Cold War-era bunker that was one of the last to be taken out of service in the UK in 1991 has become a base for a ham radio club on the North Yorkshire Moors. Like so many radio operators before in the Royal Observer Corps, the hams are surrounded by concrete walls, 5 metres deep into the underground, as they transmit important information and take measurements. Now, however it is signal reports they are sending to other hams - not levels of radiation that would have followed the dreaded nuclear blast.
The station GBØROC of the Guisborough & District Amateur Radio Club is underground radio at its finest. Like the other bunker sites, this location was once a secret. Now you can't miss its high visibility on the map of various amateur radio awards schemes: It is part of the Bunkers on the Air scheme as B/G-0919, within Parks on the Air number G0003, Worldwide Flora and Fauna area GFF-0012 and Worked All Britain square NZ60. Its video on YouTube also shows how the club welcomes visitors who walk in or, in this case, climb in - since access to the radio room requires careful descent down a metal ladder.
The bunker is a restored symbol of history of a time when the world was on edge. Now its business of radioactivity is simply just that: friendly activity on the radio.

Wages need to be based on skill vs " I want more because a CEO makes $$ " . Why don't these poor line workers become a CEO and give 90% of their wage to the line workers? So lets run some numbers using my give 90 % of 30 mil of a CEO salary away. $ 30,000,000 * give away 0.9 = $ 27,000,000
$ 27,000,000 / 50,000 workers = $ 540 Per worker, per year. If adding this to the old contract is all it takes to get them back to work , I'm all for it.

Look, I'm not saying that 100 heat isn't an issue, there are lots of other warehouses that deal with the same conditions. I find it hard to believe that UPS warehouse workers are getting fed min of $ 7.25 an hr.
The reality is, every job is only worth so much $ and loading a truck, while physically demanding, isn't a high skill job that few people can do.( Supply and Demand ) How about you learning a trade like plumbing , HVAC , electrician ? These trades pay well and there is a great need for workers. If you hook up with the right company, they can take you on and pay while you learn.

Stock buy backs make for a stronger company, think of it like $ in the bank. How is that a bad thing? Oh wait, union workers only care about getting tot he next smoke break not the long term future.
As for cars being made better, cars are FAR FAR more reliable than in days past. Cars from the 1990's back were not that great but had been improving since the 1960's

Coming at this from an engineering problem perspective:
There are two basic types of dynos Acceleration ( Dynojet , drum style ) and Loading ( Mustang , water brake , eddy current , hydraulic ) . Also, with software a loading dyno can mimic an acceleration dyno on acceleration but not deceleration. Deceleration is more critical in road racing and probably the last few % you want to chase.
Which one you depends on what you want to do with the engine / car and there are compromises with both.
Acceleration Dyno ( usually chassis though engine is possible but I don't think there are any commercially ones available. )
Say you are building a drag car. An acceleration dyno is better because it mimics actual driving, however the single drum isn't going to like acceleration from 0 MPH due to the tire contact patch being a line rather than an area.
Loading Dyno. ( Can be chassis or engine )
Say you are building a tractor puller or truck pulling a trailer. A loading dyno is what you want to use since it acts like pulling a trailer up a hill at more or less a steady state. Also, a loading dyno allows you to tune steady state.
Ideally, you would want to tune the engine on a loading dyno at various RPM / loads ( FI with spark control would be handy here ) , run loading dyno SW that mimics acceleration and tune there. I'd probably not do any manual trans style clutch dumps in order not to break the dyno, I'd limit it to converter stall speed.

Coming at this from an engineering problem perspective:
There are two basic types of dynos Acceleration ( Dynojet , drum style ) and Loading ( Mustang , water brake , eddy current , hydraulic ) . Also, with software a loading dyno can mimic an acceleration dyno on acceleration but not deceleration. Deceleration is more critical in road racing and probably the last few % you want to chase.
Which one you depends on what you want to do with the engine / car and there are compromises with both.
Acceleration Dyno ( usually chassis though engine is possible but I don't think there are any commercially ones available. )
Say you are building a drag car. An acceleration dyno is better because it mimics actual driving, however the single drum isn't going to like acceleration from 0 MPH due to the tire contact patch being a line rather than an area.
Loading Dyno. ( Can be chassis or engine )
Say you are building a tractor puller or truck pulling a trailer. A loading dyno is what you want to use since it acts like pulling a trailer up a hill at more or less a steady state. Also, a loading dyno allows you to tune steady state.
Ideally, you would want to tune the engine on a loading dyno at various RPM / loads ( FI with spark control would be handy here ) , run loading dyno SW that mimics acceleration and tune there. I'd probably not do any manual trans style clutch dumps in order not to break the dyno, I'd limit it to converter stall speed.
F1 teams run simulated races on a dyno and I'm betting other high end forms of racing do this as well. Have a look at this vid, it includes up and down shifts. And yes, it is spinning at nearly 19,000 RPM " F1 dyno test engine " on the channel " Rodrigo Coutinho "

Zavex Heart The best way to learn about how to work on a car is to dig an old lawn mower out of the junk and get it running. A mower has most of what you need to work on a car. Rusty bolts , stuck parts, an engine , various mechanical bits. Can't get it running? No problem, take it completely apart to see what is inside then try to get another one running. Sure you could just go and buy a new mower that runs but that defeats the point of learning. Next, find a lawn tractor. This will have more systems related to a car.
Also, in the midst of all of this, find any cast off device you can and take it apart, even a toaster as this gives you experience in taking something apart that might not have an obvious procedure. Sure, you could go on You Tube and find someone taking this particular item apart however, what if you don't have a net connection or someone didn't post a vid?
Take an electronics course at a local community college, this will put you worlds ahead of most DIY guys and easily 50% of mechanics. What you want is a weekend / night class not a regular college course. The weekend / night classes are more geared towards those that want to learn and generally don't have much of a test if any at the end. Be sure to get a hold of some automotive electrical parts so you can test them at the class.
I would advise you not to take Vo Tech in high school simply because you will miss out on the science / physics. Knowing how physics of the world works will give you a much greater understanding of how a car works, this coupled with electronics knowledge will easily put you in the top 10 % of people that work on cars.
As said in the vid, don't worry about what others think about whatever car you end up with, even if it is grandpa's Buick. You built it and got it driving.

@broncomcbane6382 CAN bus actually reduces wire count be allowing modules to talk to each other. Another way it reduces wire count is by placing modules near what they are controlling. Examples below.
Here is an example. A typical drivers door has: Power window, switches for all windows,power mirror ( and sometimes the switch to operate left and right mirror. ) door light, something to tell the dome light to turn on, power lock actuator and switch, door ajar switch, something to tell the alarm system the door is locked, something to tell the alarm system the door has been forced open.
With a hard wired system, you now need to run dozens of wires to the door AND have a control module or relay box somewhere. With CAN you place a module in the door, feed it power, ground and 2 wires for CAN communication.
Why would you want to run dozens of wires instead of 4?

Twelve thousand was MSRP in 2000, running this through a Consumer Pricing Index calculator makes this car cost 19,800 in 2021 $. Post 90 the Escort was a Mazda 323 platform , I verified this.
Yep, shadow was built from 87-94, I'm not sure why a 2000 was listed when I looked up MSRP. Regardless, the 9 K number from 94 would be 16,900 in 2021.

Similar new cars range from 14,400 to 20,000 in 2021 $
I don't see a problem with these numbers and the new cars have more standard features, probably get better MPG and will likely last longer.

Also, until the 1970's or so, in rural areas kids ( 13 ish + ) would being their rifles to school so they could hunt dinner on the way home. From what I've seen, school shootings were unheard of.

A car driven through a parade was pretty effective, someone with a knife can run through a crowd inflicting harm all the while blending in with the chaos.
There are more shootings on any given weekend in places like Chicago than in the recent TX incident. How will you deal with that?
