I seem to remember a bloody civil war, followed by the return of monarchy which again proved itself too autocratic, followed by the monarch's deposition, and finally the threat of a foreign invasion and the importation of a foreign (Dutch) monarch to establish the laws and the system of real parliamentary monarchy, with the monarch firmly bound by the laws of land which this gentleman would have us believe just grew "organically" and all by itself from the inherently democratic spirit of Englishness. I thought we were all grown ups here.
