Aaron forgot to mention that the condition the EU presented Yanukovich with in 2013 violated Article 3 of the Budapest Memorandum, which prohibits the use of economic ultimatums for geopolitical ends. The significance of this violation is as follows:. Ukraine has never registered its borders with the UN and the Budapest Memorandum (in which those borders are not specified either) was the only international document that guaranteed Ukraine's territorial integrity. It beggars belief that Angela Merkel, Hollande and other EU's leaders and their advisors did not know this little fact or the fact. I for one would love to know why they chose to violate the Budapest Memo (did they really think nobody would notice?!) and thereby blow wide open the question of which territories actually belong to Ukraine and which have their true home elsewhere.
