In talking about what provoked the Euromaidan protests, one rarely hears mention of the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, THE only international agreement guaranteeing the territorial integrity of post-Soviet Ukraine. The omission conceals the fact that the West had committed itself in 1994 NOT to use economic pressure (including any form of ultimatum) on Ukraine for political purposes, i.e. precisely what it did in the Fall of 2013! Here's Article 3 of the said document (Wikipedia used to have the text in its entry on the Budapest Memo; being so inconvenient to NATO, the EU and the US, that text has since been removed): "The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, to refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by Ukraine of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind;" https://www.securitycouncilreport.org/atf/cf/%7B65BFCF9B-6D27-4E9C-8CD3-CF6E4FF96FF9%7D/s_1994_1399.pdf
