Meditation can exacerbate things for many people. Vigorous exercise, on the other hand, is the safest way to help lift yourself out of a depression. The problem is that when you're depressed, you lose all will to exercise or even socialize with others. My best advice is to ignore your lack of will/desire and force yourself every day to exercise nearly to exhaustion. You'll find soon enough that the hormonal changes brought on by vigorous daily exercise will also improve your mood.

All of that is true, but you'll be able to cope with it all much better if you make yourself exercise vigorously at least 5 days a week.
