  4. ​ @noyou404 Yes, a small minority. The lands and the people were historically Russian, and there have always been only a few self-identified Ukrainians there.

  5. ​ @zloymyx2486 A huge mistake on the part of the Soviets, compounded by a ridiculously soft policy Putin also followed until September 2022, when he finally approved the mobilization. That Russia was still ready to abandon the people of Donbass back in March 2022, when it offered to have Donbass stay in Ukraine during those peace talks in Turkey is very disappointing. A great many otherwise Russian-friendly Ukrainians are still keeping their heads down because they can't tell what concessions Russia will eventually give to the West as part of a future peace settlement.
