  2. Zelensky needs this for PR purposes. Retreating from Bakhmut would alert his public at home just how badly this is going for Ukraine. And, just as importantly, the nationalists in Bakhmut have been threatening him in publicly available videos, promising to stay alive and return to Kiev to deal with him and his clique there. "Pray that the Russians get to you first," ends a video I've seen.

  4. A Russian official said just today that he expects the war to go on for another three years. The Russians don't want to crush Ukraine and finish the whole thing in one fell swoop, so it's really up to the Kiev gang how long they want to prolong this agony.
