You know exactly what sort of tendentious, historically and culturally inaccurate, even false, "scholarship" will come out of this academic when you realize that his academic position is NOT to teach Classics but the use of Classical literature, thought and mythology in POPULAR CULTURE.
The academic field of popular culture studies is absolute and total tosh. I remember listening as a grafuate student in the late 1980s and early 1990s to conference presentations by freshly minted professors with doctorates from Yale on topics such as Madonna or Prince as subversive cultural icons and revolutionary figures -- the field has been pure cringe from the very start.
Our Humanities and most of our Social Studies departments in North America no longer have any relation to the pursuit of truth, which is in fact derided as repressive, oppressive, wrong headed, and altogether benighted. This is also one (but not the only) reason our media and our journalists have become nothing more than the stenographers of power and nihilism, mere conveyors of propaganda. This is only to be expected as most of the people who work in journalism and the media were educated by acadenics who mock the very idea of truth.
A great analysis by "Metatron", as usual!
