  1. A great review of what led to this war. May I just point out that the deal breaker for Yanukovich was the economic ultimatum the EU had smuggled into its 600-page association agreement, requiring of Ukraine to give up trading relations with the Eurasian Economic Union founded by Russia. This was in direct violation of Article 3 of the Budapest Memorandum, something the drafters of that agreement must have known and a deliberate attempt to separate Ukraine from Russia. It was in fact Moscow who alerted Yanukovich to this clause in the association agreement, an ultimatum Ukraine should have rejected out of hand, in fact. A few months later, in March of 2014, just weeks after Yanukovich had been ousted in a bloody coup d'état, Christine La Garde, then head of the IMF, stated publicly that the only thing which had kept Ukraine afloat economically since 1992 was Russian largesse (to the tune of 200 billion dollars of grants and direct transfers).
