  1. The West has always (since the Renaissance) looked down on the poor(er) nations. Even in the full knowledge of the huge disadvantages of their history (being victims of imperialism and colonialism, for example). And even those on the Left, expected to have more humanism than the Right. I was shocked to learn from Simone de Beauvoir's travel diaries just how snotty and arrogant towards the parts of Europe that had suffered 5 centuries of Ottoman colonialism she and Sartre were. No trace of any historical consciousness; just condescension, to this day typical of West Europeans.
