  1. I think Zelensky wants the forces currently in Bakhmut destroyed because their survival is the greatest direct threat to himself. I've seen a video in which Ukrainian troops in Bakhmut threaten Zelensky and the Kiev gang with the promise that they'll survive and make it back to Kiev to deal with them. The video ends with them advising Zelensky to pray the Russians get to him first.
