I used to teach a general humanities course at a college in Canada a couple of decades ago, and one of the units covered Marx's understanding of history and his critique of alienation in capitalism. We had quite a few adult students from China, and at the end of the course they'd regularly tell me, with appreciation, that the Marx I introduced them to was very different from the Marx they'd been taught in China. Innocence of heart is a real virtue and it's what makes Russians such a good bunch of people, but their political leadership has no right to the luxury of naivety. Paul Craig Roberts had been warning in his blogposts for years that Putin's restraint and Moscow's desire to get along with an ever disrespectful West was sending all the wrong signals to Washington, which was incapable of seeing that except as weakness. Throughout the 2010s, PCG kept warning that Moscow's mildness would only embolden the West into a proxy war in Ukraine, which is exactly what happened. So, yes, I do hold Putin and his advisors in part responsible for this war. Putin himself admitted last fall that it was a mistake not to have gone into Donbass back in 2014 and finished everything before tens of thousands of people lost their lives.

The EU was active from the start in subverting the Ukrainian constitution back in 2013/14 and had pushed an association agreement on Ukraine that directly, explicitly violated Article 3 of the Budapest Memorandum. It's also been actively financing the proxy war and sending weapons and armaments to Kiev. It's waist deep in this 💩.
