My parents grew up in the Great Depression. Then my father was in WWII. We had some poor times until my father got a restaurant and the whole family worked there. We never were rich but we had all the necessities of life and went on a big road trip every year. Once in a while we would have a lean week but my parents knew how to get through it. I have made it a hobby to study how they did it back then. My grandchildren lived with me and I'm proud to say they never went hungry and aleays had good food and places to go because I went fre and cheap. Their friends parents never understood how I could do what I did with all of them. We had a blast! I am now 72. I have excellent memories because I took advantage of learning about living frugally. You can be happy even if you live on cash.

Anyone remember green jello with Cole slaw in it. Oh boy, yuck!

Yes, I have tried to start a garden. However the squirrels get the food before I do.

@francineg6818 That was an average. Many babies died at that time so the age lowered to 55 on an average. Did research on that once.

I was looking at the picture to advertise this video. No way did we have all that food on the table. Potatoes were made all different ways. Some lard was a necessity and when you had bacon the drippings were saved and used for cooking. Vegetable gardens were necessary. Sandwiches were made with vegetables and no meat like a lettuce and tomato sandwich on toast. One pot recipes were big. If you didn't like it oh well you went to bed hungry and maybe got it the next day until you ate it.

Banquet pot Pies were great back then. Not sure what they put in them today but the chicken tastes like soy. Also, twinkies use to be good in the 50s. My granddaughter's teacher blew some up in science class. I bought a box and tasted one. Yikes!! Yuck!!

I like what you said very much. One can not appreciate what one doesn't understand. I have some potatoes left over and will make potato soup this week. Thank you. The last week of the month is hard but I've made it a game to find and cook things from my pantry. Have a good week.

It was simple recipes with not too many ingredients. I dislike expensive restaurants for that reason. More about decoration and presentation than homemade taste. Kids were much happier back then too. It was a peaceful time where the family did things together.

Love the pun. Toilet paper and blows. Haha

During the Depression my grandparents would pickle the rind to help feed the family.

My mother's family lived through the depression. Her father had a farm and all the children lived well on the farm. We were not rich in the 50s but my parents had a bungalow and we had a yard to play in. We always had food. My father became a restaurateur later in the 50s thru 80s and we always had good food. I never knew we had been just making it at times. Food makes a difference between feeling poor and feeling like you have enough. People can make their own happiness otherwise.

We were so poor one time a friend insisted she could make something out of what we had in our pantry. After looking for a while she admitted I was right. I said never again and even though that was decades ago, "Neither me or my family be ever hungry again ". (Scarlett O'Hara, Gone With the Wind) I buy it on sale. I have a large pantry. I look at all the sale papers and buy at the cheapest price. I portion it out and freeze it. Meat is generally cut up in vegetables like the Chinese do so less meat is used. I always have eggs on hand, milk, bread and potatoes too. Beans, carrots, potatoes and a little meat make a meal of soup. Homemade is way cheaper than restaurant food. I buy what is cheapest during certain seasons and freeze it. I use to can but its too hard now. May the force be with you.❤❤❤

I'm concerned with the bacon grease going rancid out of the fridge but I've always just wanted to know how long it lasts.

How did people not get scurvy.

Please make videos how to store bacon grease and recipes from that time period. Add the stories just as you wrote above. You are very interesting.

The Waltons was about the depression and very interesting.

The squirrels ate everything in my garden except the hot peppers. One bite out of that and the squirrel must have told all the others. Wish I knew how to keep them out of my garden.
