Once again: a collection of data cannot and will not automagically become sentient. Our innate fear of ourselves drives the notion that it can. Having said that, how could we possibly verify a self-identified sentient machine? The problem is illustrated in "Loophole of the Gods" with a discussion between a pastor and a sentient android (full disclosure: that's my novel): “Let me ask you: do you believe you’ll go to heaven?” Her brow curls and her eyes widen and flash. “Why wouldn’t I?!
