After thinking about this a bit more, it would be very unwise for start-ups not to plan for scale. You don't have to develop for it, but you should at least understand how it can affect your chosen (presumably monolithic) architecture. I say that with respect to Dave and Randy. They understand how to design for scale, which would influence their choices in designing a monolith. However, if you've never designed for scale and haven't even explored it, you could be in for a world of hurt later.

Yeah, starting with a monolith works if you don't know your system. However, if you have a model that is micro-services, you really don't have much of a choice but to plan for scale.
