  3. Hate to say it, but Trump is emblematic of the problem. No, at this point, he's merely the result; it's been the Republican platform in recent decades that metastasized this problem of isolation, never fighting for people or bringing them together, but only fighting for ideas and keeping people apart. It's a platform that says big business comes first, then the people will automagically benefit. We don't believe in looking out for our fellow man, we demonize them. Everyone else is "other". And we don't want our money going to those other folks. Under that malignant energy, Deaths of Despair had no choice but to grow. God only knows what comes next.
