One of my neighbors in town is a gun person with a rainbow flag on their tac gear who will sit at the end of their driveway with a Pride flag in case their neighbor, who has a rainbow painted fence, gets harassed. There are liberal gun owners out there. And yes, I live in a strange bubble of unreality where my local folks are stridently political and yet they tend to talk about their chickens. To each other. Without fighting.

My LGBTQIA+ kid and his trans boyfriend are understandably worried right now, and all we've been able to do is reassure them that we are here, we love them, we will continue to support them, and we love them. We love them a lot. I've also made sure to have "the talk," that when, not if, they experience harassment, they can always come to us. They can talk to us, they can rely on us to support them in any way we can. I really don't know what else to do in a concrete way right now. I'm writing this in case anyone else is looking for ideas for how to support their loved ones.

@AnnaMariaWolf 😂 it might help, although people get pretty silly about their chickens sometimes. Another of my townsfolk friends likes to take theirs around on a leash sometimes like a puppy 😆

@AnnaMariaWolf It's pretty common that we end up caring for each other when the chips are truly down. It's when it's not right in front of our faces that compassion can begin to break down. I think a lot of red hats have deluded themselves into thinking that they won't be affected, that their lives won't be affected.
