  2. ​ @drdst27 It's pretty well documented (I've read some of the originals, from the period) that people thought Paul was a complete fool and unfit to rule. Catherine was pulling a QEII and protecting the throne as long as she could from someone who was going to make a complete mess of everything. His death...well, that's a bit more complicated.
