I lived under those flight paths for years. You could practically set your watch by the regularity of the plane traffic and the locations of the flight paths. What Was That Helicopter Crew Doing??!??

@JimWelsh-f6l Civilian and military air traffic control have separate systems, HOWEVER, the plane was on a well established flight path, almost certainly being properly advised by air traffic control. Military aircraft are not supposed to be near civilian flight paths, and even in the crowded air over DC there are plenty of protocols in place to prevent this. Something was hinky on that helicopter.

My SIL is an air traffic controller. This was almost DEFINITELY not the fault of the commercial flight or the air traffic controllers, who don't always have access to data about military aircraft. WTH was that helicopter doing??!?? The flight paths in and out of any airport are HIGHLY regulated for darned good reasons!

They must have been doing something hinky, because those flight paths are very well monitored, for good reason, but civilian air traffic controllers' authority and data don't usually overlap much with military air traffic control.

@chriswolfinger6638 one was on an established civilian commercial flight path, the other was not. The helicopter crashed into the plane. What you said is like saying that a car that T bones a truck after running a red light was an incident of the truck and car crashing into each other.

@Kittsuera The technology has been improving steadily over the years. Air traffic controllers are highly trained and there are measures like mandated breaks to keep them from getting overwhelmed and making mistakes. I've lived in and around DC for more than half my life, including when I was at University, where we were directly under the Reagan flight paths. Those flight paths are so well established that you could tell what time of day it was by the direction and frequency of the planes flying overhead. The civilian side of this appears to be typical and routine. The helicopter, unless they have permission to land at Reagan or they have permission to fly in the DC airspace, isn't supposed to be that close to a civilian airport for this exact reason. In a few years this incident will be cited for having to review and possibly change rules surrounding military aircraft in civilian flight paths.
