  1. It seems like the pinnipeds might also have another advantage. All the other predators had fully developed flippers, not forelimbs that could grip in any way. If the pinnipeds could hold the nautiloids, even just to keep it somewhat immobile, it would give those piercing jaws an even bigger advantage

  2. They could get creative, and look at different parts of different time periods. They are being quite specific about when within the period they are discussing they would be going to. Fingers crossed. I really like these, too.

  10. You can always be an amateur paleontologist, collecting and documenting local fossils, and you can bring your kids! I am always pointing out geological and fossil and other scientific oddities, my kids seem to think that's a normal parent thing.

  11. I've intuitively- after years of amateur biology, geology, paleontology, history, etc- decided that viruses are likely some of the earliest types is replicating organisms. While they don't really fit the current definition of life (they're ZOMBIES, ZOMBIES I tell you!!) They do seem to evince the basic properties of what we now CALL life. I ascribe to the camp that considers viruses to be some of the earliest replicating organisms in the planet. It's not a perfect idea, but it has merit.

  13. 25:15 I know there are marine animals today that naturally produce compounds that act as sunscreens, perhaps you could find something like that in the Cambrian. After all, they would be dealing with the UV, too.

  25. There is an opossum that has been visiting our compost bucket for several years. Every time we see the wily little beastie, they are holding their pilfered apple core or carrot end with their left hand. A left handed marsupial isn't something you see every day! 😂

  28. I am one of four siblings, all female at birth. Half of us, including me, are left-handed. Now I have three children, all male at birth, and two are primarily left-handed. If that isn't suggestive of a genetic predisposition, I'm not sure what would indicate such a tendency. It did mean that I always had to sit next to my lefty sister at the dinner table, which really stunk at the time 😜

  35. They've found a huge variety of fossils in my state, Virginia. Heck, I'VE found a wide variety of fossils here. Mostly marine.

  36. We have peafowl. Watching peafowl, especially while listening/watching programs such as this, will leave one in no doubt that they are, indeed, dinosaurs. Or, since they are quite clever, rambunctious, silly, and only one year old, I call them my dinosaur puppies. Watching peafowl makes it easy to see how the transition from feathered but land animal to feathered and flighted mug have happened. Peafowl are not flightless, and their trains make little to no difference in their flying skills.... but it's almost like they forget that they can fly half the time, and they run instead. It can be highly entertaining.

  39.  @BlairsVaultOfStarsAndDreams  indigenous people have been getting their vitamin c up in the Arctic from seals and whales for centuries. Since it seems to be such a vital compound, it would hopefully already be produced by sea creatures in that time period.
