  2. I've intuitively- after years of amateur biology, geology, paleontology, history, etc- decided that viruses are likely some of the earliest types is replicating organisms. While they don't really fit the current definition of life (they're ZOMBIES, ZOMBIES I tell you!!) They do seem to evince the basic properties of what we now CALL life. I ascribe to the camp that considers viruses to be some of the earliest replicating organisms in the planet. It's not a perfect idea, but it has merit.
