@resireg Are you really saying that Germany was a poor country? Talk about ignorance. Germany was one of the most industrialized and rich states in Europe before the nazis. They were suffering under the Great Depression, as everyone else.

@Hadibe-b8t It's funny that you consider that when brutalist architecture that isnpired modernist architecture was very characteristic (or even invented by some say) the 20th century fascist regimes.

I'd wish this would be more extended. Here in Spain modernist ugly and non-walker friendly developments are on the rise, I once passed by one of the new developments and asked my friend "Aren't those very ugly?" And he said "Yeah but they are 'modern'", sadly many people believe because they are "modern" they are good even if they are ugly and discourage walking and mixed use. Worse is, it's becoming more common to enclose beautiful old buildings with a boring grey facade, I've even seen some old buildings with modern ugly extensions from the roof. Or to see what they did to the Museum of Arts of Oviedo, demolishing half of the 300 year old beautiful facade to replace it with a horrible grey block and it looks terrible there in the middle of the medieval old town. Also because of the very wet climate here these buildings decay quickly and in 5 years they already have moss.

calm down, no one is talking about building Renaissance palaces. if you look at actual traditional not rich palaces buildings they don't seem that expensive. Not to mention that they last more years without costly repairs. look up the video in this channel about a new Dutch town built in traditional style that is cheaper than its neighbors, due also to smart use of social housing.

@ligametis It shows you've never been to Barcelona. It's full of green spaces, most of Barcelona was designed by one of the best urbanists.
1
@ligametis That is not unique to your country or not present in the US. The new buildings in the US are literally the same as in Europe
1
@ligametis It really shows that your argument to say that people prefer glass boxes are loose Facebook comments, while the source of the opposite are literal surveys.

@markholland7322 Definitely less than any US city. We forget in Europe that the worst areas in Europe (Moldavia) have half the crime rate than the US median crime rate. No one said beautifulness is the only factor.

Sadly not in Spain, so many of the ugliest churches you could ever imagined are here. Just look up the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís in Oviedo, I pass by it everyday and it's truly an eyesore.

I disagree heavily. I pay my tax money so that 1. Other people and myself can study what they want 2. I want to have good and well educated eingenieers and architects too and give everyone the opportunity to do it.
1
Same for Spain, it's also obsessed with the ugliest and most useless modernist architecture, and as always we'll be the last in Europe to start fixing, I fear the amount of damage the already ugly Spanish cities (because of 60s ugly brick and bad quality development) will suffer.

The city is Victoria-Gasteiz, Victoria is the Spanish name and Gasteiz is the Basque name.

America does have local styles. Look at how the cities were in the 1900s, Neogothic style from that era could be considered the local American style
1
Same in Northern Spain, one of the rainiest places in Europe and full of modernist concrete architecture that aged horribly and as a result many cities are depressing just from the bad state of the moldy buildings, even though they were built 10 years ago while a traditional building that's been there for 300 years it's fine.
1
@jasonwhite7677 Why would they want people to be hopeless? I hate modern architecture but I don't think there's any intention behind it, other than brainwashed the ivory towers architects following trends.
1
I like the typical Japanese suburb homes, they are modern but still have some Japanese vibe to them. It would be nice if they extended this everywhere, the rest is really ugly.
1
the origin of this is earlier than WW2 and starts with brutalism which is heavily associated with authoritarian regimes, namely fascist regimes
1
You need to teach this to architecture students or something. Please.
1
but they would. I recommend this channel's video on the new Dutch town with traditional architecture that's more popular and cheap than its neighbors
1
Tbh Chinese cities need to build like that, they have to house 30 million people somewhere with those massive cities.
