abraham lincoln had the best take on reparations. it was immediate, generous, and well thought out. too bad he was assassinated before getting it passed. 250 years later, its just not a realistic expectation.
the black community needs to move on from expecting any sort of reparations. time and time again, it is used as a talking point in democratic primaries to gain the black vote. yet, it is quickly forgotten until another four years. the focus should be on the present: improving the standards of living, reducing police brutality and systemic racism, and providing jobs, education, & resources so those who want to get out of poverty has a chance to get out of poverty. the only form of reparations that makes absolute sense are folks who have been wrongly imprisoned and/or experienced police brutality and folks who live in small communities where their water source has become contaminated due to decisions made by the state.
marianne's take is either pandering or if she was serious about paying a debt, she was never asked how she would go about the qualification process, because that would be opening a pandora's box, which would cause more rift in the country and especially within the black community. for example, what happens when a very white looking guy who lives in the suburbs has a great-great-grandfather who was a slave and a homeless black man whose relatives immigrated from the caribbeans?
