I thought it was because, in ye olden days, ships were manned by men. Young men. Young men who couldn’t tell the difference between a manatee and a mermaid. You know what I mean. :D

Of course, in English, we have that awkward “he / she / it” when you want a third-person singular human or person. Decades ago, it was conventional to use “he” as a general third person singular, yet obviously this is male-centric. Then “she” was used more often, but this was awkward when used in primarily male interests and seen as silly PC-don. “Hisr” and “s/he” were proposed, but also obviously awkward. “They” is sometimes used as a gender less third person, but is also awkward when contextually the subject is obviously singular. Welcome to the English language. :P
