  1. You should look at the bigger picture. There are 300 US bases surrounding China based not only in Philippines but in Japan, Korea, Australia ect. Sovereignty of SCS is not the main issue for China. The main concern is national security. This is the reason why China should react proactive, build bases on artificial islands.

Those who are in favor trade with China thought of the immense benefits for US but used ideological reasons to promote their idea. So they said that free trade would bring the so called democracy and blah.. blah.. So it was just a point the Pro China trade group used to counter those against trade with China. They just don't care about democracy, they just care about US trade interest.
