  1. I've been watching anime, as well as a lot of Japanese dramas and movies since I was young, so I'm familiar with some phrases. I can say simple greetings, I know excuse me and thank you, I can also order stuff from the menu, and ask for directions. I can also say "I don't speak Japanese" when locals spoke/replied to me in Japanese lol because I can't understand longer/more complicated sentences. My pronunciation is decent enough because my native language is Indonesian, we pronounce vowels the same way, so I found that locals understood me just fine. I also simplified my English when asking for help, to make sure the other person understood. I also found that if you speak to locals in Japanese first, most of the time they would be pleased to know that you put in the effort to learn a bit of Japanese as a tourist.
