They named it after the Philistines that live there a long time ago (aren't the current Arab population though as they wouldn't be there for another half a millennium or more) What happened to the Philistines? No one knows, but certainly then they aren't there anymore After conquering the region in the 1st century BCE, the Romans renamed the area "Palestinia". The Romans did this to minimize Jewish claims to the land as the older name of that province was Judea
