"the capital is the place where the government is placed" Here in the Netherlands we have clearly skipped that lesson. Our capital city by law is Amsterdam but the entire government is located in The Hague (Den Haag)

@CityBeautiful to be fare it does not take much to be bigger that the Vatican city in size
218
well to be fair they don't really have the problem of city politics. if they want to have a bus driving there it will happen. there won't be any one complaining about the noise from that bus. or because they want to build a new bus stop there won't be a other business owning the extra space.

@zakadams762 Monaco does that by being very tiny. Same for a lot off micro nations there size help. Sure the US or any nation could use military forces but it will place that nation in a bad light for attacking that small nation. Besides they often have a powerful enough ally direct on hand. For Monaco that would be France, The Vatican has Italy, Andorra has both France and Spain.
61
however if you take Vatican city as the entire nation. the US might have to turn Ohio in to 1 big parking lot.
51
A gas stations very convenient location could be repurpose for general logistical uses. They are often very convenient located for trucks to get to and back to the main roads.

here in the Netherlands smaller villages are quite often just swallowed up by bigger cities. however do to the way villages are often build they will keep there identity at least in the old village centre. but even just new build residential areas can get a Small town feeling by making sure there is a elementary school, kindergarten, a small shopping area and lower traffic with in the actual area. the ring road around it could act as the boundary
43
It's a video about airports not airplanes. There is a connection but not enough.
42
@akhighpin012 it has more to do with the fact that back when the Netherlands was a French puppet state king Lewis (brother of emperor Napoleon) just decided to make Amsterdam the capital even if the government was situated in The Hague. with the sole reason that it was the biggest city. and the Netherlands has just never changed that.
35
@GregVidua that is a mountain for us.
32
My entire country is one big floodplain. we named it the Netherlands. only if you build in a area below the water line make sure that you take the fact of water in what ever you do.
31
event current bigger cities have that. some people might not move out of a borough or two that in them selves are big enough to function as a town with in. the question is if you are outside of the mega city and talk to someone do you identify your self as someone of said city or a part of said city? . if that other person is from outside of that mega city and they ask where do you live? do you give them the name of the mega city or the area you live with in? even now someone living in New York City do in the city you may refer to a borough bit do they do that to someone from outside of New York City?
25
no you might not have noticed but about a hour ago they switched names for a day. just to confuse tourists for a day. (what tourist you ask I don't know)
24
@Wiejeben the joke is out side of the Netherlands it still is mostly Dutch dredging companies doing the reclamation work. (BosKalis or Van Oort)
22
I live in the Netherlands myself. There is nowhere in the law that state that cyclist are exempted from general traffic rules. Not adhering the law is a different factor. more over it is important to say that those customs should not be uses out side of the bigger urban centres. I live in Zeeland and if you would do that what you are talking about. You will find your self involved in a mayor accident . People do not expect you to ignore traffic rules.
21
@gazpachopolice7211 No the king has his work palace in The Hague. and his current residential palace is in the area of The Hague as well. the last king that lived in Amsterdam was from 1806 till 1810 ( king Louis Bonaparte (younger brother of emperor Napoleon l )) but ever since the current dynasty came back as king they have lived mostly around The Hague. (only former queen Juliana had here residential palace in the east of the Netherlands) But when ever there is a abdication or crowning of the new king (male of female) that by law will happen in Amsterdam.

I think you miss a other benefit. If you have a shop or even a shop and let say a barbershop directly with in a walkable/cycle area you create a community hub. people will be drawn to go there even just to have a chat with there friends, family or even (semi) acquaintance. It creates a place to be social with in your area.
19
@malcolmholmes2596 because people tend to be attracted to their home of origin. That goes very deep. All the extra land offshore was for most just a economical enhancement. Aimed at making the home place better.
18
that is a forbidden topic. 😉
18
you mean a aqueduct? they are still being used. at 5:27 that is how they often look like even if they do get higher of the ground if needed.
18
@kthemaster1999 here in the Netherlands people that do own both a car and a bicycle. (everyone has a bicycle the car is optional) they tend to go once per week (or two weeks) to a bigger supermarket with there car. but during te week if they need the smaller items they will go to the local (smaller) shop by bicycle (or if it is really close by on foot). here a ''strip'' mall in located with in a residential area and is often even a mini focal point of that area. (there will be a elementary school near by some elderly flats. (often they are above the actual stores) and other small items to get you going during a week) but they are developed with pedestrians in favour of the car.
17
similar here in the Netherlands. however for most that 10 minute walk will be swapped for a 5 minute bike ride. in general people here don't walk much beyond a minute or 3.
17
@TheGroundHopper they are part of the government
17
@Stevenverx not Napoleon but his brother. our rabbit. Lewis (Lodewijk)
13
we do have something like strip malls. Here in the Netherlands a lot of neighbourhoods do have a little shopping area. often with two supermarkets (one brand supermarket one discount (Aldi/Lidl) a few smaller shops (a flowershop, barber, pharmacy, a clothing shop, a baker) a pub and or fastfood joint and a ATM. The real big difference is that in between the parking lot and the shop there will be a footpath big enough to walk on comfortingly and have enough space for a few bicycle stands. how ever the are not really being seen as a competition to the shops in the city centre as the shops in the centre are way more diverse.
12
Águila701 there is no problem with living on a floodplain. As i said in my comment above. My home country is almost complete below the sea level and is intersected by multiple major rivers. The name it self means lower land. Water is one of the few things you can anticipate for years and years in advance. Just prepare for the absolute worst case and make it double as strong as needed.
11
I can attest that it really is worth it's money. for about $20,00 a year you are treated to way more content with no adds or sponsor massages. Plus the Nebula originals are a real winner. O and you get Curiosity Stream for free.
11
@tonywalters7298 it's do to the Vatican being so small as a sovereign nation that statistics are squared in there favour. It's like tey can also claim to have the biggest supermarket in the world. Percentage wise to the size of said nation. (It's actually very small and would fit in a delivery truck for a middle sized supermarket bricks and all)
10
@tsareric1921 I think that for the UK Geoff Marshall is more or less doing just that.
10
For most it will not be interesting at all. a street level commuter line would be more then enough if there is even a demand at all. They are really low populated to the point that it would not pay anyone to have a commuter rail.
10
i would like the option of making the city's in a area effect one and the other. now they ere islands in a void. also let it be possibel that you don't start with nothing but with a town of a former mayor and you have to deal with the stuff already there.
9
here in the Netherlands we are actually in the process to give reclaimed land back to the sea. with the aim to give space for marine biodiversity to get better.
9
I can strongly recommend you to try Nebula. A lot of the bigger Education You Tubers are active there. With often Originals they only show there. Plus like in City Beautiful's case they add extra materiel in there regular content instate of the sponsor deal.
8
@David_Journey not that difficult a lot of networks are already linked.
8
you can go to Limburg and see something similar

My favourite train station is the Amsterdam central station. The outside and the inside are both spectacular. https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/thumbnails/image/2016/03/22/19/central.jpg

@yay-cat A university here in the Netherlands did that with a cruise ferry. There where just not enough student housing. So by renting a ship for a year (docked) they instantly had about 300 bedrooms, a local supermaked used a onboard shop as a branch. there where a ton of extra space for lectures or free time activities. Plus with in the area that is normally only for crew all the amenities where just there. also as it was also a ferry the car deck was converted to store bikes and mopeds. It had a seperate access point for cargo to be delivered.
7
the canal might be a bit excessive use of water. You are in a desert city that already is coping with water shortage.
6
@Arjay404 you did with in the first sentences. "Oddly enough in many ways the old ways are still the rule in the Netherlands'' it is not a rule. People do it but still not a rule. A habit or custom yes but a rule is something people agree one. It's a custom you general see whit in the Randstad and other larger cities. those customs do not apply in smaller provincial towns and villages. even if it is only cyclist. people here expect you to really follow the rules. as those are also the custom here. When i get people over from those bigger cities I always warn them of that factor.
5
@kailomonkey So a gold plated mobility scooter should get the right of way. ;)
5
@EnjoyFirefighting the trick is to have a bike that looks so bad no one will even try to steel.
5
@gazpachopolice7211 No problem. the thing is the king could choose multiple options to use as his residential house. (he does not own any of it. the state does)
5
@IanZainea1990 it would become a secret parking lot. Think of it. As far as your eyes could see 1 big sea of black tarmac.
3
@kattkatt744 but they still can look very samy. It's our version of a shopping block. The biggest diffrence is the diffrend fasade for the buildings.
3
yes and no. you can help it a bit but creating a swamp is something only time can do.
3
heresy? it's the entire concept of LEGO to make it your self.
3
France has more interest in keeping it as is. Do to the strange situation the region of France around the border can work in Monaco. And Monaco pays France for protection.
2
Also, you should take a look at LGBTQ+ city planning too. what is there to plan? they can live in the city where ever they would please. i would see it as terrible if people would make special neighbourhoods for LGBTQ+ only. people are people that is all.
2
@IvanSN here in the Netherlands that's not really a thing. communities here are really just a mix off everyone
2
If you look at places like the old city centre of Dubai or older Spanish towns. they have build there towns and homes to work with the intense heat. you can use that as a cheat sheet.
