"the capital is the place where the government is placed" Here in the Netherlands we have clearly skipped that lesson. Our capital city by law is Amsterdam but the entire government is located in The Hague (Den Haag)

@akhighpin012 it has more to do with the fact that back when the Netherlands was a French puppet state king Lewis (brother of emperor Napoleon) just decided to make Amsterdam the capital even if the government was situated in The Hague. with the sole reason that it was the biggest city. and the Netherlands has just never changed that.

@gazpachopolice7211 No the king has his work palace in The Hague. and his current residential palace is in the area of The Hague as well. the last king that lived in Amsterdam was from 1806 till 1810 ( king Louis Bonaparte (younger brother of emperor Napoleon l )) but ever since the current dynasty came back as king they have lived mostly around The Hague. (only former queen Juliana had here residential palace in the east of the Netherlands) But when ever there is a abdication or crowning of the new king (male of female) that by law will happen in Amsterdam.

@gazpachopolice7211 No problem. the thing is the king could choose multiple options to use as his residential house. (he does not own any of it. the state does)

what do you mean with two metro areas growing in to one? do you mean a merger of two metro lines? that depends on how the company's that run them operate.

@michaelloedel750 o here in the Netherlands we can make it complicated. we have villages sized city's ( they are city's do to having gained city rights back 700 years ago) but we don't have incorporated and unincorporated. every place belongs to a township. but then we have been able to grow in to what works for a few hundred years.

@Cecilia-ky3uw that is done for the international guest to the city. We know that they would struggle with the official Dutch name of : Schravenhagen or even the common used Den Haag. We have done it with several place names. We ha e a official Dutch and a official international name.

@Cecilia-ky3uw This is what both Wikipedia as the official site of the city said (the later was only in Dutch). Etymology The Hague was first mentioned as Die Haghe in 1242.[10] In the 15th century, the name des Graven hage came into use, literally "The Count's Wood", with connotations like "The Count's Hedge, Private Enclosure or Hunting Grounds". The spelling "'s-Gravenhage" was officially used for the city from the 17th century onward. Today, this name is only used in some official documents like birth and marriage certificates. The city itself uses "Den Haag" in all its communications.[11] The post office specifies that letters must be addressed to “'s-Gravenhage”, but of course a letter to “Den Haag” will be delivered just as well. The railway stations are named “Den Haag”. Signposts mention “Den Haag”.
