@TylerShawful use household vinegar as a fabric softener and it also helps the machine it self clean better. the biggest joke is that the people that sell the machines in a store actually advice you to do so. and every now and then a bit of soda salt and let the machine do a cycle on it's highest temperature setting.

@kcpwnsgman just read the instruction manual of your laundry machine it will explain you how you should use it. and if you don't have the paper version ask google they might even have a video explaining how to for your exact machine. But out of the blue if you have a special compartment for the detergent use that. it does not matter if you do that before or after you load in the clothing. it's purposely separated. grease stains after washing could be the detergent it self if you wash at a to low temperature. (I had that my self) some detergent just need a bit warmer water.
