  1. China is like a deeply insane person playing SimCity. These urban villages seem to be an interesting and unique part of recent Chinese culture and I'm sure a big tourist attraction. So the local government is going to demolish them. It's like they are trying to de-China-fy China, trying to demolish what is unique about it. Plus, if all these local governments are so indebted how will they afford all of this? I suspect, in true Chinese fashion, they will demolish them into a huge heap of rubble, then run out of money, and so leave the heap for decades untouched with weeds growing up between the broken blocks. Must be a China thing. Anywhere else it's called being batsh*t crazy. Perhaps China is trying to be good Communists like the Soviet Union and build street after street after street of identical drab gray apartment buildings. Communists seem to crave uniformity and hate individualism. I mean, if you let one building be blue instead of gray, well, there goes the whole country.
