  2. The consistent theme in all of these disasters: corruption. Paid off inspectors, sub-standard materials, falsifying reports, cutting corners for profit, etc. China is too corrupt to ever be a true first-world nation. They can have all of the shiny new cities and high-speed rail they want, but they are still third-world.
