As a truck driver I had enough things to worry about. I don't want "range anxiety" added to it. If they had a battery that would run the truck for 700 miles (11 hours) and it would charge overnight as I slept without incinerating me and the price was in line with diesels then I would consider it. Not until.

I suspect EV trucks would still be held to the 80,000 pound limit which means they could only carry half the freight of a diesel because of the weight of the batteries. Twice as many trucks to haul the same amount of freight. I wonder how ecological that is?

Some of the people in the comments are right on board with it. The insanity is spreading. I love when people who work 9 to 5 in offices decide that they know what's good for truckers and the freight business. Especially when they work for the government.

In trucking every pound counts. I hauled onions in 50 lb. bags and was paid by the bag. Under those circumstances you don't carry an extra pair of underwear if you don't have to because for every pound of personal stuff you haul you lose one pound of freight which means you lose money. Trucks are held to a standard 80,000 pounds total weight by law, including truck, trailer, cargo, and extra underwear. Hauling heavy batteries means less freight which means lower wages for truck drivers and means higher prices on every single thing you buy because every single thing you own or consume was on a truck sometime before it got to you. Plus there is a nationwide shortage of truck drivers already and if you cut the pay further that will get worse. Trucking affects the entire economy and thinking you can just throw a bunch of electric trucks on the highway and think "problem solved" you are insane.

Nah, she's old enough. I think they should get married. The unbounded (irrational?) optimism of the Viking paired with a woman who was born angry should make for a blissful union.

Why would life improve?

@Atheist-Libertarian Well that's great. Give me a call in 2030 and I'll consider it.

@Globalscanningeyes You did notice I said "700 miles"? And in a semi, not a Silverado?

I guess we'll wait and see but I think it all is a pipe dream. EV types have the fervor of religious zealots and they don't readily listen to reason. @GolLeeMe

Check and see how electricity is generated. The vast majority is from fossil fuels. I believe I read 70% fossil fuels, 20% nuclear, and 10% "green". All you are doing is removing the emissions coming from an exhaust pipe to a power plant smokestack.

Have you ever been in a truck repair shop? The pace is glacial. I suspect swapping out your batteries would take at least a day if not two. In trucking probably more than any other industry, time is money.

I don't think that you can assume EV trucks will be any better made.

When you look at all of the various angles I think horse-drawn wagons would be better than electric trucks.

EV trucks will not be able to carry near the load of a diesel truck because of the weight of the batteries therefore there will need to be many more trucks on the road to carry the same amount of freight which will raise freight rates substantially and will wear out the highways faster and piss off a lot of 4-wheeler owners. Give it up.

And they need to rent office space and buy furniture and computers and pay electric bills, etc. etc. At the rate the government is going every person in the country will work for the government one day.

And all of this electricity is coming from...where? Beware utopians.

Yes, trucks that only buzz around town all day on one charge and are back in the yard overnight being charged. Long-haul semis? No. When I drove truck I didn't always end up overnight at a truck stop. I spent the night backed up to a loading dock or out in the corner of the company yard because I was out of my 11 hours and could go nowhere. Often in a Walmart lot or Home Depot, etc. etc. Once your hours are up you stop unless you want a multi-thousand dollar fine. I really don't think there will be a charger conveniently located at all of those places.

You are excluding a large number of drivers who are owner-operators and they will very much look at price.
