Another angle: It wasn't only the manager who was at fault for the Raptor issues, it was a Team issue. Knowing that the boss is working on Thanksgiving doing your job certainly gets your attention, and asking people in on Thanksgiving is kind of a penalty for allowing the issues to build up. He wanted to remind them that they weren't working at Blue Origin, and light a fire under the team, more than just solving the technical problems that weekend. Also, he specifically said in the email that those who had family commitments didn't need to cancel Thanksgiving and rush in, so he probably got the people who didn't have anything special planned, or were happy to have an excuse to avoid the in laws lol I guess I have worked most holidays during my career to give others the time off, so I also don't see it as such an unforgivable thing...

First of all, think of it as punishment for letting the project go off the rails. It wasn't just the manager who was at fault, it was the team. So pushing them when he discovers the problem gets across to them that he takes it seriously enough to spend Thanksgiving with them solving the problems. Secondly, he didn't force anyone back, he specifically said that if they had family commitments they could keep them, so only the people who wanted to came in.

He didn't. The email specifically said that if they had family commitments they didn't have to rush in, but he was letting them know that they had been slacking long enough, because it wasn't only the manager who was at fault for the issues, and knowing that the boss is going to be doing your job on Thanksgiving because of your issues does get the attention of the whole team.
